It’s one of the most common worries I hear from couples while planning their elopement or intimate wedding: “What if it rains?”
Many people start searching for backup venues, covered locations, or indoor photo spots—just in case. And while having a plan B can feel reassuring, I want to gently challenge that instinct for a moment.
Because here’s the truth: rain isn’t something to fear. It’s something to embrace.
Interestingly, I’ve been incredibly lucky so far—every single wedding I’ve photographed has been blessed with bright sunshine. But as a photographer, I’ve always been curious. What happens when it does rain? How does it change the atmosphere, the light, the feeling of the day?
Last Feburary, I found some answers.
I was in Fuerteventura, an island I absolutely adore. It’s known for its endless sunshine, raw volcanic landscapes, and warm, golden tones. Naturally, even when I’m traveling, I can’t switch off my photographer’s eye—I’m constantly scouting beautiful locations for my wedding couples.
But this time was different.
The winter of 2025–2026 had been unusually rainy and stormy for the island. I arrived wondering how it would look, expecting perhaps a duller version of the Fuerteventura I knew.
Instead, I found something completely unexpected.
The landscape had transformed. Where I was used to dry, rugged volcanic terrain, there were now soft greens and blooming flowers. Not quite like the Alps, but still a striking contrast—alive, textured, and full of depth. It felt like discovering a new version of a place I thought I already knew.
And that’s when it really clicked for me.
So… what if it rains?
What I experienced on that trip changed my perspective. I visited many of my favorite spots under cloudy skies, light showers, and shifting weather—and they were still incredibly beautiful. In fact, sometimes even more so.
A rainy day in Fuerteventura reminded me a lot of springtime in Belgium, where I’m from. You get these magical combinations: soft rain followed by clear skies, dramatic clouds, sudden bursts of sunlight, even rainbows. The weather moves, breathes, evolves throughout the day.
It’s not a limitation—it’s a dynamic backdrop.
Yes, those classic golden hour beach moments are still possible. Rain rarely lasts all day, and when the skies open up again, the light can be absolutely magical—soft, diffused, and incredibly flattering.
But more importantly, rainy weather invites you to let go of control.
Instead of trying to force the day into a fixed vision, you allow nature to guide you. Maybe your ceremony shifts slightly. Maybe we chase a break in the clouds. Maybe we embrace the moodiness, the wind, the textures.
And honestly? Some of the most powerful, emotional, and unique images come from exactly those moments.
Also—don’t underestimate the inland locations. While the coast often gets all the attention, the interior landscapes can become even more vibrant after rain. Colors deepen, textures stand out, and everything feels fresh and alive.
There’s a different kind of energy. A quieter, more intimate beauty.
So if you’re worried about rain on your wedding day, I understand. It’s normal. But I also want you to know this:
There is no such thing as bad weather.
Only different stories, different light, and different possibilities.
And if you trust your photographer—and allow yourselves to be present in whatever the day brings—you might just end up with something even more magical than you imagined.
